There is no single "Indigenous Way of Knowing"; each nation and community has its own unique and complex knowledge system.

  • Mentorship: Learning through a close relationship with an elder or knowledge holder. 
  • Water Offering: An act of spiritual connection, demonstrating respect for all relations (people, animals, the earth). 
  • Land-Based Learning: Practical skills like hunting, fishing, and plant knowledge are integral to this way of knowing, fostering self-sufficiency. 
  • Holistic Frameworks: Models like the AFN Toolkit's "8 Ways of Knowing" show how knowledge can be embodied, such as in skilled physical activities like dancing or carpentry. 

We combine Western and Indigenous knowledge throuugh the two-eyed approach. Indigenous ways of knowing refers to the holistic and ancestral knowledge systems developed by Indigenous peoples, deeply rooted in their connection to their specific land and environment. This knowledge is passed down through oral traditions, storytelling, and mentorship, emphasizing respect for all beings, interconnectedness, and the practical application of skills, rather than purely rational or analytical Western frameworks. Indigenous knowledge can be seen as a vital partner to Western science in addressing global issues.
